National Geographic Magazine’s Editor-in-Chief Susan Goldberg on plastics in the ocean
National Geographic is not only one of the most beautifully crafted and highly respected publications on the planet. Its images and stories can also have a profound impact on the way we live our lives and our attitudes toward the environment.
At Davos 2019 I met the Editor-in-Chief, Susan Goldberg, to talk about why plastic pollution has become the most high profile environmental issue of our time.
Susan thinks that much of our obsession with plastic is its ubiquity in that we all use it everyday and we are all aware of how much we throw away. Also that seeing the striking and often distressing images of plastic and its impact on both the environment in National Geographic and other places is spurring us to act.
“We talk about climate change and people want to run screaming from the room as it is too big and there’s nothing that I can do” explains Susan. “With plastic pollution it is something that people can change through everyday actions.”
It is an inspiring conversation and a reminder that small actions can make a difference.
