Breaking the Bias with Meenakshi Lekhi

The theme of International Women’s Day 2022 is #BreakTheBias.

Last Tuesday, I spoke with Meenakshi Lekhi, Indian Minister of State for External Affairs and Culture.

Meenakshi is a lawyer by trade, who championed the rights of women in the Supreme Court, before entering Parliament in 2014.

Meenakshi seeks to break the bias that only women can stand for women’s rights.

She argues that “any woman with a head over her shoulders is a feminist”, but also that “women need not stand alone when they are dealing with gender issues.” Men should endeavour to support women to thrive and succeed.

Directing her words to an audience from the world of finance, economics and government, she emphasised the need for more opportunities where “women can take the lead and men can take the supportive role”.

“Women need not stand alone when they are dealing with gender issues.” – Meenakshi Lekhi, Indian Minister of State for External Affairs and Culture.

At last weeks India Global Forum, Meenakshi reflected on the theme of #BreakTheBias and the need for men to take a more supportive role in the fight for gender equality.
